I've made couple of modifications around here, much in response to the great feedback you've all been kind enough to provide over the past few days. I was planning on waiting a little longer before delving back under the bonnet again, but frankly impatience got the better of me :P
The navigation panel to this site has now moved entirely. Actually, not entirely - it remains untouched in the raw markup and has only been modified by JavaScript. However I've been experimenting with content toggling once again, similar to versions 2 through 6, and must admit having a soft spot for the practice.
Simon Kitson's been quite rightly contesting the use of dropdown lists for navigational purposes, and his explanations definitely made me think twice before running out this feature (or it may well have made it directly into version 12). However, though it's kind of a dropdown I don't personally feel it hinders too much, and is actally easier to use that the last one (of which you had to scroll down to the bottom of the page to use). The pages are much cleaner now too, which I felt was important. Either way I'd definitely be interested to know your opinions on this decision.
Secondly I've removed the page transition effect, further to Owen Mc Gauley's feedback that it slowed the user experience. Like many of you I liked this effect and am a little sad to see it go, however I can't fight facts - it operated very slowly on the Internet Explorer browsers and did hinder the user when browsing any more than a couple of pages.
So there we go. Have a nice weekend folks :)

Steve, I like the new navigation, it really helps to add to the minimalism (or take away from it).

I have found minimalism to be the hardest thing of all to do, so I expect you'll be tinkering again by next weekend. - On 23rd April 2007 Owen said:

Hi Steve. The new navigation is very nice. I like it a lot.

Sorry for getting you to ditch the page transition. I feel awful ;)
I suspect we will have a new flavour of stevetucker.co.uk in say....3 days ;)
Good work mate. - On 23rd April 2007 Steve Tucker said:

Very nice execution on the new navigation. My only concern is that it may be a bit too hidden. However, I am a bit on the extreme in terms of designing for obviousness. ;)

Nice work man. - On 25th April 2007 Dustin said:

The top-let navigation button is great. It's convenient and has everything i need at the click of a button. What i especially like is that it doesn't take up any valuable space on the site itself.

With ie7 you have about 10-20 pixels of whitespace above the navigation, which has resulted in a vertical scrollbar.

Thanks PJ & Dustin, though I agree it may be a bit too hidden. Have to get my thinking cap on I reckon...

@Richard: Well spotted mate, and now fixed - thanks! :) - On 3rd May 2007 kitsimons said:

Only just spotted this post now - is the RSS feed acting up, Steve?

I like the navigation. Is it a drop-down? Sort of. But it presents *all* of the navigation when revealed, which is very nice.
You know what would be really nice though - a way to navigate through articles without having to pop open the navigation. A "view previous entry" link at the end of the article for example. - On 4th May 2007 Sean said:

Could you tell me how the navigation works?

Shaun, there's a button at the top left hand corner of the screen which you've got to click. To be honest though it's a little too hidden (obviously) so I'm looking to redesign it somehow
